A guide to the weekend, Oct. 11-13

The Yellow Jacket believes Greene County holds many events for people of all ages. With the weekend approaching, here are three events within the county that anyone can participate in.

1. Greene County Historical Society Harvest Festival

The Greene County Historical Society is hosting its annual fundraiser for the 48th time. Attend the Harvest Festival Oct. 12 and Oct. 13. and join in on crafts and watching re-enactments to celebrate the fall and the history of the county. Both days will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 with kids ages 10 and under entering for free. Click here for more information on the Harvest Festival.

2. Foundry Tour

Take a tour of a machine shop built by William A. Young in 1900.  The shop, which produced steamboat parts and World War I and II equipment, closed in 1965 with all its machinery remaining inside. From 12-4 p.m. this Sunday, anyone can see what the machine looked like in its heyday. To schedule a tour and find more information, call George Blystone at 724-710-4898.

3. 1st Chicken & Rib Throwdown

Kristie Volchko and Mike Gulley have taken it upon themselves to organize a chicken and rib cooking contest. Come to the Greene County Fairgrounds Oct. 12 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to see backyard grillers and restaurant professionals cook their best meat recipes. Pay $20 to be a taste tester or $5 for general admission. For more information, click here.
