The Waynesburg Baseball team recently traveled to Florida for the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, where the team went 3-3 in six games.
The team played six different games over a six-day span, the first matchup coming against Thomas College in a 6-4 win in favor of the Jackets. After that win, the Jackets also won 10-2 against division two school Davis and Elkins College.
The Jackets then dropped the next three with losses coming against Albion, Russell Sage, and game one of the doubleheaders against Trine, to end the trip Waynesburg picked up an 8-3 win against Trine to end with a 3-3 record while in Florida.
“It helps us bond more as a team because you get to live with different people,” junior Alec Engelmore said. “Everything is team oriented whether we go to the resort, or another guy’s house, or even go out to eat.”
He also talked about coming into game one in Florida to close out the final five innings striking out six batters and only walking one.
“I love coming into games where it close and my job is to shut down the other team. Thomas is a good ball club so I knew I had to limit or prevent the damage so our offense could come back and win the game.”
Sophomore Dalton Lucey said a lot of positive things about his time in Florida
“The trip really gives the team a good bonding time since we do everything together, we cook together, and clean together. The whole team went to the resort to swim and chill by the pool. This team is family to me, we are all brothers.”
Lucey also said how he believed his pitching was in Florida.
“It improved my confidence, like I said this team is family and I see a bright future with the team we just must keep the right mindset and play every team with everything we got.”
The Yellow Jackets are now 5-3 overall on the season, with no conference games played yet.
Waynesburg takes on Hilbert College on Wednesday for a double header, the first game starts at 1 p.m. with game two directly after.
