Cole Keller - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University baseball team stepped out of Presidents’ Athletic Conference to play on Monday, March 31 and swept University of Pitt Greensburg by scores of 17-1 and 12-1.
The Yellow Jackets came out loose and confident from the first inning of game one and never looked back.
Waynesburg put up four runs right away and set the tone for the rest of the day. Sophomore Kaden Flambard delivered the big swing early, driving in three runs during the opening frame to give the Jackets full control.
That early offense made a big difference for starting pitcher Zach Scibelli, who turned in a complete game performance on the mound.
Scibelli worked efficiently all afternoon, allowing just one run while scattering hits and trusting his defense behind him.
“It felt good to go out there and pitch the whole game, and my defense behind me helped me out a lot throughout the game,” Scibelli said.
With the offense producing right away, Scibelli was able to stay aggressive in the zone and pitch to contact.
“It was awesome to have run support throughout the game. I felt like I could cruise through the game and pitch to contact,” Scibelli said.
Waynesburg continued to apply pressure as the game went on, adding to its lead with consistent at bats and patient approaches at the plate. The Jackets worked walks, put balls in play.
Flambard finished with three hits and four RBIs to lead the offense, while Weston Winchester reached base multiple times and helped keep innings alive.
Game two followed a very similar script, with Waynesburg once again jumping on the scoreboard early and never letting up. Freshman Eli Boring sparked the offense in the first inning, bringing home Mason Leonard with a triple before scoring on a wild pitch.
From there, the Jackets kept passing the baton. Runs came in nearly every inning as the lineup stayed disciplined and aggressive in hitter’s counts.
“We just played relaxed and controlled what we could control,” Flambard said. “When someone got on, we were able to move them over and the next guy got them in. Each batter passed it to the next and we had very good at bats.”
Flambard also pointed to his approach at the plate as a key to his success.
“I went back to an approach that has been working for me, middle oppo, just trusting my hands and putting the ball in play and letting the defense do the work,” he said.
On the mound in game two, senior Dalton Lucey delivered another strong outing, allowing just one run and striking out seven.
The biggest swing of the day came in the fifth inning when freshman Luke Buckner launched his first collegiate home run, a two run shot that added to the lead.
“It was a 2-0 count and I was looking for a fastball I could do damage with, but the pitcher hung a slider and I was able to adjust and catch it out front,” Buckner said.
Buckner also credited the team’s overall approach for the offensive breakout.
“We were more aggressive in hitters’ counts and were able to capitalize on mistakes over the plate, which is why we were able to do more damage,” he said.
Waynesburg finished the day with 29 total runs and a steady approach that showed growth on both sides of the ball.
“The team will use this as a boost by having a lot of confidence going into conference play,” Scibelli said. “We just have to keep working hard.”
With conference play continuing this week, the Jackets believe this performance can serve as a turning point.
“As we have plenty of conference games left, we know the first few series will be tough,” Flambard said. “But this will help our confidence. Pitching, defense, and hitting were all there today and we need to carry that into Grove City and take it one series at a time.”
Waynesburg returns to PAC action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Grove City. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
