Football looks for redemption against Grove City

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets are now 2-3 on the young football season after falling to the Allegheny College Gators last week.

The Yellow Jackets are 2-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, which is tied for second.

This week, Waynesburg travels to Grove City to face the Wolverines and to potentially get back in the win column.

“We just need to have a great week at practice,” Waynesburg head coach Dr. Cornelius Coleman said. “We also need to get into the field room and sit down and study what they do.”

The Wolverines are 2-2 overall and 1-1 in PAC play.

The Wolverine offense is led by junior quarterback Sutton Ellis who is coming off a three touchdown performance versus the Geneva Golden Tornadoes last weekend.

Defensively, Grove City is led by senior linebacker Ben Bladel, a Preseason All-American, who already has four sacks on the season. Bladel had one sack and one tackle for loss last year vs Waynesburg.

Last year, Grove City won the contest 51-0 with the Wolverine offense having a dominant 557 yards of offense to Waynesburg’s 169.

Waynesburg will rely on sophomore quarterback Luke Hudson to command the offense to a better outcome this season. Hudson is 73 for 101 passing on the season with five touchdowns to four interceptions.

Wide receivers Tyler Richmond and Isaac Trout each have two touchdowns and over 200 yards and hope to add an explosive attack downfield for Waynesburg.

“I think as a team we need to look at ourselves and realize that we have not played our best game as a team yet,” Richmond said. “We need to have an excellent week of preparation and watch a lot of film. Practice and preparation during the week are ultimately what wins you games on Saturday.”

Star running back Zayne Cawley’s status for the game is still unknown. If Cawley does not suit up, expect junior running back Carson Shriver to handle the bulk of the carries.

Shriver has 334 yards on the ground and four scores for the Yellow Jackets this season.

The Yellow Jacket offense looks to bounce back this Saturday at Grove City with the game’s kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
