As we get closer to Thanksgiving, people tend to get into a foodie frenzy, with this year Being no different. The ninth annual Empty Bowls event will be held at First Baptist Church on Nov. 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. according to the Empty Bowls flyer
“The origins of this event all started in 2014 by a few Bonner Scholars” said Adrienne Tharp, who oversees the Bonner Scholars program and also serves as the assistant dean of Student Development.
Empty Bowls is a nationwide movement to help local schools to help combat hunger in their communities.
“A few of our Bonner Scholars back in 2014 felt very strongly about this event we decided to have it within Waynesburg University,” said Tharpe
The event will include a fee that will need to be paid to receive a ceramic bowl. There are two prices of $15 for people who order their bowl in advance, and $20 for those who order at the door. Children 10 and under receive free admission, but do not receive a free bowl.
In addition to the food that will be served with the ceramic bowls, there will be a silent auction with all proceeds going back to the Green County School Districts weekend food drive according to the Empty Bowls flyer.
For those interested, this event is not only for Bonner Scholars, but open to all Waynesburg University students.
“We encourage any student to volunteer for this event. It is a lot of work, but it is really rewarding after it is all over,” said Tharp.
According to Tharp, this has historically been a “very successful event,” notably in the first years the event was held.
“We made about four to five thousand dollars in the first few years we held this event,” said Tharp.
