Men’s soccer falls at Franciscan

It was a tough day for the Waynesburg University men’s soccer team. Despite having a lot of scoring opportunities, the Yellow Jackets lost 3-0 to Franciscan Wednesday.

“We had a couple chances that would’ve changed some momentum in the game and we just didn’t put them away,” head coach Brad Heethuis said.

Nick Miller scored the first goal for Franciscan in the 13th minute on a penalty kick off of a  handball in the box by a Waynesburg defender. The second Franciscan goal came in the 24th minute from Sebastian Koehler. The final goal was scored by JP Bobak in the 86th minute, and that put the game out of reach.

Despite Waynesburg getting shut out, it had a fair share of chances with 14 total shots and six of those on target. Heethuis just thought the Franciscan defenders were too much to handle.

“Their two center backs and two center midfielders really won almost everything in the air for them yesterday.” Heethuis said. “We couldn’t make the change and they just kept coming back with first balls, winning aerials and coming right back at us.”

The loss to Franciscan drops Waynesburg to 2-5 on the season. The Jackets will next take the pitch at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 when they host Baldwin Wallace at John F. Wiley Stadium.
