Men’s soccer forces tie against Grove City

Jackets now 0-0-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play

Both the Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets, and the Grove City College Wolverines entered Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Friday night with the same record of three wins, six losses, and one tie. The matchup was even, so it was no surprise that the game ended in a 2-2 tie at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Scoring came from both sides in the first half. Grove City senior Christian Caporaso beat Adam Dolan in the fourth minute on a penalty kick.

Waynesburg responded quickly when two senior midfielders connected in the 12th minute. Nate Kummer found Justin Buberl in open space, and the game was tied at one.

“Obviously, personally it’s nice to score, but it’s a team sport so I want to help out the team and as much as I can and do whatever I can for them,” Buberl said.

Grove City answered, however, with just over 16 minutes to go in the first half when Kennan Roewer scored on a rebound giving the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. Waynesburg outshot Grove City 10 to six in the first half, but Grove City still lead on the scoreboard.

Despitetrailing at halftime, Waynesburg  returned with energy, and tied the game just seven minutes into the second half. Freshman David Brown scored his second goal of the season in the 52nd minute after the ball deflected off of a Wolverine defender, making it 2-2.  The Jackets once again outshot the Wolverines in the second half seven to four, but the game stayed tied into overtime.

Neither team was able to end the game during two ten minute sudden death overtime periods. Waynesburg kept up its offensive pressure outshooting Grove City four to two. The Jackets ended the second overtime frame with a last second shot, but Wolverine goalie Luke Greenway stood tall once more.

Waynesburg’s next game is scheduled for next Saturday, Oct. 12 at Bethany.

Head coach Brad Heethuis was pleased with how his team performed, but feels things could be better from a tactical standpoint moving forward.

“I’m really happy with what we did tonight, but I think we can still play the ball quicker, have less touches on the ball, and create so

many more chances around the goal, getting the ball out of the goal and try to finish,” he said. “It’s good to have another week to get ready for Bethany. It’s always a tough place to play.”
