Katelynn Makowski came to Waynesburg University having attempted several different paths in life prior to her arrival, then coming in pursuit of a major she would go on to change. However, despite such a journey in several different directions, she leaves, “incredibly grateful” that her path led her to Waynesburg.
As mentioned Makowski mentioned how her first steps following graduating high school were not considered what most would deem as the standard fare.
“I Graduated high school in 2018 and attended Cal-U for a year. I withdrew from college to join the Air National Guard which took me a year and a half out of school. Upon completing my training, I applied at WU in a Pre-Physical Therapy program. I discovered that this was not the path for me and changed my major to English Education which was truly my fit. Because of the length of time that I was out of school and my change of major, I became very motivated to make up for lost time. Makowski said.
With so much experience in and out of college, Makowski seemingly has several options on what she wishes to pursue next, although according to her, she already has a concrete plan in place.
“I plan on taking my education certifying exam and obtaining my PA teaching certification for 7-12 grade English. I will move to North Carolina and apply as a substitute teacher at various local schools as it will be in the middle of a school year and I would like to see a few school settings before attempting to acquire a full time teaching position the following school year.” Makowski said.
Makowski spoke on her gratitude towards her professors and advisor, the latter being Cory Goehring, who serves as an associate professor of english at Waynesburg University. When speaking to Goehring on his time working with Makowski, he was not shy in his praise and pride in seeing his advisee grow in their shared department.
“It is always a tremendous experience to watch a student achieve her goals. Kate has been a motivated and disciplined student since coming to the English Department, and I have no doubt that her determination and drive will serve her well with whatever challenges and opportunities come next. Goehring said, while also commenting on what he saw as Makowski’s greatest strength as a student. “Kate’s strengths include her dedication and resolve. From changing her major mid-studies to working over the summers to get back on track, Kate clearly has demonstrated more determination than the average student. Add to that her maturity and discipline, and it is easy to see why Kate is an exceptional student.”
When giving her closing message for those at Waynesburg University, Makowski remained grateful for her growth academically, and still “bittersweet” that her time here has concluded.
“I have grown so much academically and personally throughout my attendance. The education/ english departments are filled with the most wonderful and encouraging people. I will truly miss my days at Waynesburg University.” Makowski said.
