The Waynesburg University women’s basketball team continued their run of success with a convincing 80-61 victory over the Titans of Westminster this past weekend.
The game started off slow for the Jackets as they were outscored in the first quarter 18-11. However, the remaining three quarters saw the Jackets outscoring the Titans by a sizeable margin.
Head coach Sam Jones was pleased with the way his team responded.
“I thought we really did a really nice job, we had a huge second quarter offensively and defensively and sometimes it takes us a little while to get going, but we responded really well,” said Jones.
Junior guard Anna Bartman led all scorers with a career high 21 points, going 6-9 from beyond the arc and 3-4 from the foul line.
“She’s worked hard and grown as a player, she did a really nice job of moving the ball and when it was her time she let it fly,” said Jones.
The second quarter looked to be an even contest between the two teams when junior point guard Monica Starre scored a layup that would start a 14-3 run by the Jackets to give them a 38-27 lead going into halftime.
The momentum carried into the second half which was all Yellow Jackets, outscoring the Titans 42-34.
Another bright spot for the team was the level of play from the senior class. Addy Knetzer added yet another double-double to her season, scoring 14 points and hauling in 14 rebounds.
Fellow senior Mackenna Drazich added 16 points with eight rebounds and senior Rachel Eng notched her second double-double with 10 points as well as 10 rebounds.
Jones said he is happy to see his senior class come together for a huge victory.
“They have all had different career arcs, but all three have been consistent, good attitude, hardworking kids the entire time, so it’s great to see it all come together,” said Jones. “They are major contributors to what we do and they lead very well by example.”
The senior class for this Yellow Jacket team has been quite interesting but the there are some underclassmen that have shown some promise for the future.
Sophomore Erin Joyce chipped in 10 points for the cause and Jones sees them as a hardworking group that provides balance for the team.
“We’ve got a really good group of underclassmen but they have picked it up because they are there defensively and obviously they score,” said Jones. “We try to be a very balanced team and we want to share the ball and we want lots of people to score because that makes us pretty hard to guard.”
The road victory gives the Jackets sole possession of third place in the PAC and ends a stretch of road games for the team.
The Jackets return to action on Wednesday in the Rudy Marissa Fieldhouse to take on the defending PAC champion Thomas More. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
