Waynesburg Men’s Basketball season ends in first round exit

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets fell to the fifth seeded Grove City at home on Tuesday with a score of 65-58.

Jordan McLoyd led the Jackets in scoring with 24 points and Antone Baker had 20 and nine rebounds on the day. The two combined for 44 of Waynesburg’s total points.

Grove City started the game hot hitting four three pointers in the first seven minutes taking a 12-8 lead over the Jackets. Waynesburg would never take the lead the entire game. Once halftime hit the score was 30-23 in the favor of the Wolverines.

“I hope they do it again next year, gave us a chip on our shoulder, we know what we got, and we are looking forward to coming back next year,” said Korey Mitchum on the pre-season polls and the accomplishments they have had so far.

With six minutes left in the game the Jackets were down 13 with a score of 48-43, but the Jackets did not go down without a fight. They would go on a run and cut the lead down to only four with a score of 55-51.

However, the Wolverines had the Jackets number all night and did not miss when it mattered most and went 8/8 in the final 40 seconds from the free throw line. The Jackets would fall 65-58.

The Jackets went 33-percent from the field and 4-24 from three and only tallied seven bench points. However, The Jackets had proved the pre-season polls wrong being projected 9th and finished 4th in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Scott Bilovus said the future of Waynesburg Men’s basketball is going in the right direction.

“Next year we want to keep on building, a 14-win season is rare, but we want to get to 17/18 and we want to be competing for a first-round bye.”

The Jackets finish the season with a 14-12 record, their best since the 2014-15 season. With some leaving and many coming back, including Antone Baker, the future is in the hands of the Jackets.
