Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets lost their second and final non-conference game to the Dickinson College Red Devils by a score of 52-19. The Yellow Jackets are now 0-2 for the third consecutive season.
The Red Devils started off hot with an 11-play, 72-yard drive that was capped off by a 10-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Ben Klassen to tight end Kellen Boyer. Waynesburg then drove all the way to the Red Devil 24-yard line but an interception thrown by senior quarterback Tommy Burke on the 12th play of the drive left the Yellow Jackets scoreless. Dickinson scored two more unanswered touchdowns before Waynesburg finally got on the board in the second quarter after a 21-0 deficit.
Waynesburg once again deployed multiple quarterbacks in the contest with sophomore quarterback Luke Hudson manning the offense for the Yellow Jackets’ first score. Hudson was 6 for 6 for 55 yards on the drive. Senior running back Zayne Cawley capped off the drive with a 6-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 21-7 after the Drew Pinkerton extra point. The Red Devils added one more score in the first half to make it 28-7.
“We always want to be balanced,” Waynesburg head coach Dr. Cornelius Coleman said. “The biggest thing from last week to this week is last week we put ourselves behind the sticks on several early game possessions, but this week we were able to move the ball accordingly, do some great things on offense.”
The Yellow Jackets received the ball after half with Hudson leading Waynesburg onto the field.
Hudson connected with his senior wide receiver Isaac Trout for a massive 64-yard reception which put Waynesburg on the Dickinson 7-yard line. Cawley then picked up his second score of the game with a 2-yard rushing touchdown to make it 28-13 after Pinkerton missed the extra point. The momentum was then immediately halted when the Red Devils’ kick returner/wide receiver Keesean Campbell returned the ensuing kickoff 94-yards for the touchdown.
Dickinson added a field goal, a punt return touchdown by returner Sixten Motivala and a rushing touchdown by running back Bobby Brickner to make the score 52-13 Red Devils. Klassen finished his day 10 for 17 for 163 yards and three touchdown passes. Boyer was the Red Devils leading receiver with 4-catches, 58 yards, and two scores.
Burke led the Yellow Jackets on a fourth quarter 13-play, 68-yard drive for the last score of the game, connecting with senior tight end Giovanni Cipoletti for the score to make it 52-19. It was Cipoletti’s first career touchdown grab.
“Those are just things we are preaching on our young men,” Coleman said. “The fact of making sure we will play for four quarters, and finding who we are.”
Hudson was Waynesburg’s leading passer, going 9 for 15 for 139 yards and an interception. Burke was 12 for 19 passing for 81 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Cawley rebounded in the game with 60 rushing yards and two scores after just 12 rushing yards in the team’s opening contest.
“Well going into week one I was playing through a pulled hamstring which hindered my gameplay greatly and I only touched the ball 8 times, ” Cawley said. “Week two my hamstring was feeling great and I touched the ball a little more which allowed me to get into a groove and open up some runs.”
The Yellow Jackets will open President Athletic Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 20 when they welcome the Hiram Terriers to John F. Wiley Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
