While Waynesburg University approaches the halfway point of the spring semester and just a little over two months left to the school year, there are still plenty of events and celebrations to be had. While the campus will have to wait for ones such as the commencement day ceremony in May, March will be a jam-packed month for events that have been a mainstay for Waynesburg University for several years, although one happens to be returning after a brief absence.
To go along with Charter Day on March 19, the University is planning to host a Charter Day Day of Service just three days prior. According to an email sent out by Dean of Students Kelly Hardie, the Center of Service Leadership is coordinating the service project alongside any student, faculty or staff who is willing to volunteer for the multi-site service project. For those interested in participating, the information can be found on the MyConnect bulletin board. https://waynesburguniversity.forms-db.com/view.php?id=1353684
David Floyd, director of development and alumni relations, elaborated on how alumni relations will also have a hand at work during the Day of Service.
Floyd said, “We’ll probably have some alumni who will be joining the students, the faculty, the staff in serving in some different locations, and we’ll be sending out a special invite to our alumni council to see if they would want to join as well.”
Floyd did mention that the event, although being a campus-wide initiative, is still a student-led event and emphasized that Adrienne Tharp, assistant dean of student development will be overseeing a large majority of the event.
“The response has been really great so far. We have a lot of campus houses signing up, we have a lot of faculty and staff signing up, so I anticipate getting well over 100 people to participate” Tharp said, while including that despite this event being open to the entirety of the University, including alumni, there is still to be more involvement from the community as well. “I think right now we have 10 organizations that have reached out that want groups in various capacities, so some of those sites are going to take up to 20 or 30 people.”
As mentioned on the University website events tab, another event transpiring around the same time, although this is a week-long initiative, is Orange Week, which unlike the Day of Giving that occurs early in the fall semester and is a singular event, Orange Week stretches between March 15, all the way through March 22, with each academic department, varsity athletic team and organizations such as the Student Activities Board, among others raising funds for their specific needs.
“We’re certainly looking forward to seeing how things continue to grow, and we have a lot of departments and teams and other programs on board this year, so we’re certainly optimistic that it’ll be another great day for the campus community,” Floyd said when speaking on the success from last year’s event carrying over into this year. “One of the big things with Orange Week is, even a little bit more with our Day of Giving in the fall, we really lean on the departments, and the teams, and the programs to kind of reach out to their own networks and communities and family members and friends to help spread the word.”
All of this, as well as other upcoming events, are coming together to help celebrate not just Charter Day, but also this year being the 175 year anniversary of Waynesburg University. For more information on what is to come regarding the upcoming events and celebrations, they will be listed on the events tab on the University website.
