Why is “SpongeBob SquarePants” making partnerships with other companies?

It’s 2024 and “SpongeBob SquarePants” is still making partnerships; from an official Krabby Patty Burger with Wendy’s to an in-game takeover of the video game, Brawl Stars and everything in between. I enjoy my adventures alongside the yellow, fun-loving, friendly sponge just as much as the next person, but why now? Why, so suddenly, is SpongeBob SquarePants making partnerships with companies?

I believe it has something to do with 2024 being the show’s 25th anniversary. That’s right, SpongeBob has been on air for 25 years. In July of this year, the website, “The Hollywood Reporter” published an article written by Kimberly Nordyke on July 10, 2024 titled, “Kids’ Choice Awards Stage to Celebrate SpongeBob SquarePants, Feature First-Ever Rainbow-Colored Slime (Exclusive)” In the article, it discusses the 25th year anniversary celebrations, which have only continued since then. The article details how Wendy’s will be launching an official, highly anticipated, Krabby Patty meal on Oct. 8. This collaboration will include Wendy’s fresh fries and a premium cheeseburger featuring-arguably the make or break-secret Krabby Patty sauce, in hopes to capture “the magic of the iconic fictional sandwich for SpongeBob fans.” Also included in this collaboration will be a Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty. You can count on my car being in the Wendy’s drive through come Oct. 8th.

Continuing the silver jubilee of SpongeBob SquarePants is the SpongeBob takeover of Supercell’s Brawl Stars. According to the same article, a part of the SpongeBob and Supercell partnership is the one and only, John Cena. The game will take place on a Bikini Bottom map with SpongeBob characters reinvented as brawlers. Cena’s enthusiasm for this teamup is evident: “SpongeBob inside Brawl Stars is absolutely wild and I’m all for it – it’s the epic entertainment tag team fans have been waiting for!” This takeover will run from September 5th to October 2nd. The developers of Brawl Stars believe that SpongeBob SquarePants’ humorous, high-energy demeanor makes the show a perfect fit for the game. One of the reimagined characters will be a muscle-bound El Primo SpongeBob. NickALive!, a website that details the latest news going on in the world of Nickelodeon posted an article on Sept. 5, titled, “SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS SHOWS UP IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR MOBILE GAMES FOR A SPECIAL TAKEOVER” shared, “temporary power-ups will provide increased damage, like the Krabby Patty, Clarinet and Kelp Soda. Meanwhile, themed game modes bring fresh gameplay and chaos, such as in Jellyfishing where players battle to catch…you guessed it, jellyfish.”

Moving on from the, sure to be hit, mobile game collaboration, there has been Spongebob apparel made for the 25th celebration. According to spinnaker-watches.com which is the official website of the Spinnaker Brand, they released a SpongeBob SquarePants 25th anniversary limited edition watch collection, featuring main characters: SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs. Also, Crocs, Puma, and Nikola Jokic created SpongeBob SquarePants themed shoes. According to the website, the products were sold out in just three hours.

Additionally, there was a Limited Edition Xbox Series X featuring the face of Spongebob SquarePants. Set to release on Dec. 19, 2025 is The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants featuring a face off against the famous green pirate, the Flying Dutchman.

It’s hard to believe that our favorite yellow sponge and his friends have been around for 25 years, and as a fan, I love to see this type of longevity. Over the years, SpongeBob has given us countless laughter, joy, and memories. Congratulations on your silver jubilee, SpongeBob SquarePants.
