The women’s tennis team lost to Washington & Jefferson 9-0.
The team falls to 1-7 overall, and 0-6 in the conference. This is the third straight year that the Yellow Jackets have been swept 9-0 by the Presidents.
The ladies had three doubles matches and six singles matches on Thursday Oct. 5 and won two sets, one in doubles between Alli Bailey and Aubrey Burns, and a singles set win by freshman Karly Starcher.
After the matches against Washington & Jefferson Starcher said “I learned that how much a mental attitude can change a match entirely.”
Starcher has picked up two wins in her freshman season, a singles and doubles win against La Roche.
Interim head coach Randy Pettit enters his second year with the women’s team and has focused on getting to know his young team. Waynesburg’s roster consists of just freshman and sophomores.
“Getting to know how they respond to different situations,” Pettit said. “Some of the girls like to be pushed and other like a more laid-back approach to instruction. They are a great group to work with.”
The women’s tennis team will put that game behind themselves and prepare for its match today in Beaver Falls against the Geneve College Golden Tornadoes.
“I tell the girls all the time to have a short memory. That is with matches as well as within each game and point,” Pettit said. “They have improved over the season and we are hoping to put that all together.”
With the fall season coming to an end in just a handful of days Starcher has learned a lot in her first collegiate season.
“The biggest thing I have learned is how important the team is to tennis, and how it wouldn’t even be half as enjoyable without them,” said Starcher. “I truly love my teammates, they all are so lovely, I couldn’t ask for better ones.”
