Waynesburg wrestling falls to Thiel as McGeary picks up lone win

For years, Waynesburg was the team to beat in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. For the first time since 2008, Waynesburg was beaten by both of the other teams in the PAC.

Washington and Jefferson picked up a win against its longtime rivals last week. On Friday night, Thiel finished off an undefeated season with a 42-6 victory against Waynesburg.

“[Thiel] has a really nice lineup right now and they’re wrestling really well right now,” Waynesburg head coach Ron Headlee said. “I watched their match against W&J and I knew we were going to be up for it.”

Waynesburg could not find a win until the last match of the night. Rocky McGeary saved the Yellow Jackets from being shut out with a pin in the second period over Seth Phillips.

“I think Rocky’s conditioning is getting a lot better now,” Headlee said. “He’s starting to believe in his stuff because he’s not getting tired now.”

Waynesburg received some reinforcements in its lineup to only give up two forfeits compared to the four they were giving up.

“It’s just really hard in dual meets right now when you don’t have everybody,” Headlee said. “When you don’t have a full lineup, I think it makes it harder on everyone.”

Heavyweight was the one bright spot for the Yellow Jackets as Trent Patrick picked up a win in an exhibition match to go along with McGeary’s pin.

“Trent comes in and works really hard. He’s continuing to get better,” Headlee said. “I think he’s been helping Rocky a ton. We’ve been really blessed at that weight class.”

Headlee notices areas in which his team can improve as the team competes in two matches on Sunday in Maryland and then in the PAC Championships at Waynesburg in two weeks.

“We haven’t been able to finish our shots. We’re doing a good job in our setups,” Headlee said. “We’ve also been focusing on our mat returns. It’s important that you do that this late stage of competitions when you head into PACs and regionals.”
