Both men’s and women’s soccer played the Chatham Cougars with both Waynesburg teams getting a win in their matchups on Saturday night.

In the women’s 2-1 win the first goal was scored at the three minutes and 21 seconds mark of the game by Chatham’s Allison Rutledge.

Waynesburg would tie up the match with a goal from Kaitlyn Prickett at the six minute and seven second mark.

From there the match would be at a stalemate, until the second half.

Kate James would score the Yellow Jacket’s second goal of the night at the 54-minute mark.

The lady yellow jackets are now 4-3. Overall and are 2-0 in conference play. Head coach George DeAugustino said how he feels towards his team’s play early in the season.

“It is a great feeling,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “The team has worked very hard over the last calendar year to be in this spot.  We are really excited about it but know we have a lot of work left to do.”

DeAugustino also said how his team is transitioning from last season.

“I think the transition is going well.  We have a great staff and team here and we have been working as a team since last November.  It has been a long process, so it is awesome to see all the hard work paying off. I am proud of this group.”

The lady yellow jackets will be taking on the St. Vincent Bearcats on Wednesday with the match starting at 8 p.m.

“Looking at ourselves we must continue to be disciplined defenders,” DeAugustino said. “They have some talented attacking minded players and we must maintain our composure in the big moments.”

For the men’s match, would also start off quick with Waynesburg striking first only five minutes and 56 seconds in. The goal was scored by Zachary Johnson assisted by Seth Massotti.

Johnson would strike again at the 18-minute mark along with another assist by Massotti.

Chatham would cut the lead in half with a goal by Xavier Johnston assisted by Azavier Coppin.

Waynesburg would extend the lead back to two goals after Matthew Serrano put the ball in the back of the net.

No goals were scored in the second half of the match for either side, and Waynesburg walking away with the win.

The yellow jackets are 4-3 overall on the year and 1-1 in conference play. With the biggest takeaway being the men remaining undefeated at John F Wiley stadium this year with a 4-0 record.

“Momentum is a big key to success when you play a game every three days,” Head coach Treg Lunger said. “Finding that form consistently allows us to prepare and execute well in training sessions and on game days, so it’s a big part of staying successful as we move through the next match week cycle.”

Lunger also said what his team must do to win their upcoming match.

“The biggest key to our success is consistency over the entire 90 minutes of play…we look forward to the opportunity to compete and to earn another three points. Our preparation will focus on taking care of details and chasing after our playing style consistently.”

Lunger initiates the fact that “I think I says we enjoy playing at home, but we also want to make this a tough environment to come to. I hope our guys continue to demonstrate and let other teams know they can expect our best when here.”

The yellow jackets will also face off against the St. Vincent Bearcats on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at John F Wiley Stadium.
