Men’s tennis loses to Geneva 7-2

On Tuesday Oct 3rd the Waynesburg University men’s tennis team was defeated by Geneva College with a score of 7-2. This match would be the end of their 2023 fall season.

Senior Ethan Lown led the team in singles by defeating Geneva player Jadon Hooke in two sets, winning 6-4 and 7-5.

Lown also teamed up with fellow senior Adam Huckstein in a doubles match and secured an 8-4 victory.

Lown would be the only player to win their singles match while Lown and Huckstein were the only pair to win their doubles match.

Lown and Huckstein came back from their previous match against St. Vincent where they lost 8-2. Constant progression has been a big theme this year for both men’s and women’s tennis.

Head coach Randy Pettit, also the women’s coach, talked about how the team competed overall and how he feels about the spring season.

“All in all, I saw some good things Tuesday evening,” Pettit said. “Ethan was able to get two wins on the night. What doesn’t show up in the box score is that he was down 3-1 in the first set and won 6-4 and down 5-2 in the second set and won 7-5. That’s not easy to do.”

“Ethan and Adam were solid in their double match as well,” Pettit continued. “None of our singles were overpowered. They lost some games at deuce and those matches could have gone either way. I’m looking forward to next semester with these guys. With some quality work over the winter, they should compete well with some of our remaining schedule.”

While the team competed and is continuing to progress, they couldn’t pull out the win in the end.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on March 23, 2024 against Mount Aloysius at 12:00 p.m. to kick off their spring season.
