Waynesburg men’s soccer takes both conference games last week

The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets played two conference games this past week and delivered two victories over the Westminster Titans and Bethany Bison, improving to a 6-2 overall record, and 2-0 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

“The collective identity of the group in terms of being willing to serve one another, it’s been fantastic to watch the guys put that together as we move to the second half of this season,” said head coach Treg Lunger on how proud he is of his squad so far this season.

The Westminster game started with a quick goal from Waynesburg by sophomore Mason Lewis to get the Jackets up 1-0. The Titans would then respond tying the game 1-1, but a minute later, sophomore Zachary Johnson would get the Jackets back up 2-1. Eventually, the Titans would take a 3-2, lead but  two goals from freshman Sarpong Kwabiah and one from freshman Josh Smith the Jackets would see the Jackets take the win 5-3.

“What we focus on after we get scored on is just moving on to the next play,” said senior captain, Seth Massotti. “We try not to let the play before impact our next few minutes, so that’s how we were able to come back three more goals and win the game.”

Bethany was another victory for the Jackets as once again, Kwabiah had two goals, with a third goal by Waynesburg would secure the 3-0 win. Senior captain goalkeeper, Michael Francus would tally his third shutout of the season with five saves against the Bison.

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets have two more conference games this coming week, both being at home. They play the Allegheny Gators Wednesday, Oct. 1, and the Washington and Jefferson Presidents on Saturday, Oct. 5.

“Wiley is our home, it’s as simple as that. We know how much we bring to the table and our momentum going into these two conference opponents can’t be matched,” said sophomore Matthew Serrano on how playing on at home affects the teams play. “Playing at Wiley will just make winning so much better.”
