Women’s Soccer wins 15-0, stays undefeated

“It was a good night to be a Yellow Jacket,” head coach George DeAugustino said.

The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team is now 4-0 to start the season after a historic 15-0 shutout over the Keystone College Giants.

“We were ready to play and it was a good game,” DeAugustino said.

Waynesburg has gone three straight games without giving up a goal.

“We have a very good, tight knit group on our team, which is something you don’t always get,” senior goalkeeper Mya Riggle said.

The Yellow Jackets have outscored opposing teams 29-1. Twelve different players connected to the back of the net in yesterday’s contest.

“You don’t go into these games expecting that kind of production,” DeAugustino said.

Julz Mohrbacher started the scoring for the Yellow Jackets. Mohrbacher currently leads the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in goals and points, with five goals and 12 points.

Kylie Criddle completed the hat trick, something only six other Yellow Jackets in school history had done.

“Kylie went out and scored some great goals and played the best version in this game,” DeAugustino said.

Sophomore Amanda Pepe scored twice in less than one minute. Mohrbacher assisted on the second goal by Pepe, who is now third in the PAC in goals.

Six freshmen scored at least one goal in the game.

“It was a great moment to get players some awesome and good opportunities out there. To not only get experience, but also showcase to the coaching staff what they can do in the game situation,” DeAugustino said.

Gracie Smith, Ryan White, Bella Norton and Sophia Bertazon all recorded their first collegiate goals. Jessi Jury matched the team’s single-game record with four assists in one game and scored her first collegiate goal as well.

“I’m really proud of the group overall and what they were able to do throughout the course of the 90 minutes out there,” DeAugustino said.

Freshman Kya Huggins now has three goals on the year. Reagan Mittendorf, Sydney Brown and Miracle Hershey and Bertazon each had an assist in the game.

“When we play the right way, we can get great outcomes, so the unselfish plays are great,” DeAugustino said.

Senior Lindzey Miller and juniors Bee Roberts and Rylie Alexander all scored their first collegiate goals. DeAugustino wanted to give a special shout out to those players.

“Those girls have worked really really hard for our program throughout their career here and it was a super awesome moment to see those girls be rewarded for their hard work,” DeAugustino said.

The Yellow Jackets had three fouls and nine offside calls.

“We weren’t on our details there,” DeAugustino said. “At halftime we talked about it and we cleaned it up a little bit as the game went on.”

Keystone’s lone shot came in the 25th minute. Riggle prevented the shot from getting past her.

“Being able to be there and to keep that shutout alive was a really cool moment to make that save,” Riggle said.

Out of the 15 goals for Waynesburg, nine of them came on assists.

“We tell our group all the time that we gotta play the right way. We have to play the correct style that makes us the best version of us we can be,” DeAugustino said.

This is the first time since Sept. 30, 2023 that Waynesburg shut out a team while compiling 10 plus goals.

“The game of soccer is beautiful and we wanted to paint a beautiful picture and the team did that,” DeAugustino said.

Waynesburg will travel to Pitt-Greensburg on Sept 10. Last year, the Yellow Jackets tied against Pitt-Greensburg in a 0-0 match. Their last win against Pitt-Greensburg came in a 1-0 overtime win in 2016.
