Chris Fox - The Yellow Jacket The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team remained undefeated at home by shutting out Carlow, 6-0, last night. This is the Yellow Jackets fifth shutout win of the year.
“Defensivley we have been incredible,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “It’s a team effort, not just the back line and the goalkeeper. It takes everybody to be this good.”
Sophomore Amanda Pepe started the scoring for the Yellow Jackets in the ninth minute on a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal to give Waynesburg the 1-0 lead. Miracle Hershey assisted on the goal.
“She has taken a major step forward. Pepe has put in so much work in the offseason,” DeAugustino said. “Not just on the field but in the weight room. She has raised the standard for us and it’s so much fun seeing her play.”
In the 12th minute, junior forward Julz Mohrbacher sent a shoulder ball shot over the head of the goalkeeper to advance the score 2-0 for her first goal of the game.
“I love shoulder ball, over the summer, I worked on shoulder ball with some younger girls at my family’s sports ministry,” Mohrbacher said. “One of my favorite things to do is work on the shoulder ball because that is an alternative to a header and it gives you a lot more control. I was confident that it could be directed into the goal.”
Senior captain Reagan Mittendorf kept the scoring going by breaking past a defender to send the ball past the goalkeeper to the bottom left corner of the goal to make the score 3-0.
“She has stepped up so much that it’s creating problems for the opposing defenders that causes them to think,” DeAugustino said.
Ryan White made the game 4-0 by passing through the Carlow defense and hit the back of the net past a diving goalkeeper.
In the 40th minute, Mohrbacher broke free from a Carlow defender to make the game 5-0 on a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal with her left foot. This was Mohrbacher’s second goal of the game. In her offseason training, she worked on strengthening her left foot to be more versatile and gaining more confidence.
“That second goal goes back to my confidence, and in my mind I wanted to see if I could take someone on and go to the goal,” Mohrbacher said. “I was happy it was with my left foot too because I worked on it in the offseason.”
At the half, Waynesburg had eight corner shots, 19 shots on goal and left Carlow without a single shot while Waynesburg had 28.
“We want to limit shots all the time,” DeAugustino said. “The more we keep the ball, the less opportunity they get.”
Kya Huggins made the score 6-0 in the 66th minute off an assist from Hershey. This was Hershey’s second assist of the game.
“The players who come off the bench are ready to go and play, that is one of our strengths,” Mohrbacher said.
Waynesburg totaled 40 shots to Carlow’s one and collected 25 shots on goal while Carlow did not have any. DeAugustino contributes Abby Ngugi and Jocelyn Stiffler as key contributors to this team’s success defensively.
“Those two have been so solid all year,” DeAugustino said. “I think Lex Greenlief deserves more recognition too, she has also made some of the best saves that I have seen in a while.”
The Yellow Jacket closed out its non-conference play with a record of 6-1 while outscoring opponents 36-2.
Waynesburg has time to rest and get ready for the start of Presidents’ Athletic Conference play starting on Sept. 27th when they travel to Westminster.
“We are going to start crafting a plan while looking over film to get ready for the fast pace play Westminster has,” DeAugustino said. “ Right now they earned a break and a day off.”
The Yellow Jackets have not won a game against Westminster since 2011. Amanda Pepe looks forward to the PAC play.
“It’s going to be really exciting to start conference play,” Pepe said. “ Westminster is no easy task. We are going to be putting in the work, but with the team we have this year, I believe we can do it.”
