Men’s basketball has a new face on the block

For the past three seasons, head coach Tim Fusina has had Tom Weiler by his side as an assistant coach. Over the offseason, Weiler took a head coaching job at his alma mater, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, in Edison, New Jersey.

Over the offseason, Fusina hired Zach Stevens, a veteran coach at the NCAA Division III level. Fusina talked about the role that Stevens will have on the staff.

“He improves our program through his experience,” Fusina said. “He has a lot of experience at the Division III level, played Division III basketball, coached at three different Division III schools.”

Fusina feels like Stevens is doing a great job already with the kids as well as the recruiting process.

“I think we’re lucky to have somebody with his experience level, be a part of our program.” Fusina said.

Stevens is coming from Nebraska Wesleyan University, who went 20-7 overall and was the runner up in the American Rivers Conference in the 2024-25 season, joining a Waynesburg team that went 7-18 last season. Stevens talked about the mindset that he wants to instill into the team.

“I think first thing is to make sure we’re building good work habits,” Stevens said. “Making sure that the guys are finding out what we’re trying to do here and setting a standard early in the preseason with conditioning and our lifting and commitment to the core and make sure that carries over to October.”

Stevens is bringing along eight years of coaching experience from Gordon College, Regis College and Plymouth State University. Stevens talked about what the opportunity to coach at Waynesburg means to him.

“Just can’t take this for granted and you know all I can do is focus on the task at hand and be where your feet are,” Stevens said. “Make the most of every opportunity you have.”

Stevens begins his coaching debut with the Yellow Jackets on Nov. 7 in Hamburg, New York for the Hawks Against Hunger Tip-Off Tournament.
