Men’s golf places eighth at La Roche Invitational

It was a tough day for Waynesburg on the green, as an eighth placed ending capped off the trip to La Roche. Head coach Michael Cipoletti had some insight on the low placement.

“The course played tough, not just for our guys either.” Cipoletti said. “It was the greens; the green speeds were really fast.”

Noting this disadvantage to every team, senior player Hudson Pincavitch managed a top ten appearance as he finished scoring an 80. Being eight above par (72) and placing tenth is indicative of how Cipoletti explained the play at La Roche on Monday.

“I was happy with the finish Pincavitch had,” Cipoletti said. “Getting inside the top 10 on a rough day is really impressive.”

A few minor mistakes cost the top three finish according to Cipoletti. This was the goal for Waynesburg as that would show consistency and confidence. However, this can be used as a stepping stone.

Putting was a little bit of a struggle as already described by Cipoletti. The greens affect multiple players including sophomore Braden Benke.

“I want to shoot better,” Benke said. “I think I had four -4 puts, and three -3 puts which add up.”

Benke finished with a ranking of 55th on the day and scored a 93.

Looking into the Franciscan Fall Invitaional, Waynesburg may not carry a full team according to Cipoletti.

“Probably only going with four, so we have reserves coming into play, at least one,” said Cipoletti. “We are not expecting a win, we just want to see our guys adjust. Then see our reserve step up and have a good match.”

Growth is the name of the game for Waynesburg, Cipoletti wanting to see growth as a season still lurks ahead.

Benke wanted to emphasize putting when traveling to Franciscan on Sept. 27. It was noted by himself that he and the team partly struggled with putting. However, Benke is hoping to come out with a win.

“We will be practicing putting with the coaches,” Benke said. “I also think we want to try and win one here as we are due for a win.”

Tee time for this Saturday against Franciscan is at 1:30 p.m.
