0-0 draw opens PAC play for Women’s Soccer

The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team completed its first conference game with a scoreless draw against the Westminster College Titans yesterday night.

“We’re proud with how we played,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “We played a really good brand of soccer.”

The Yellow Jackets came away with a point on the road which DeAugustino said is massive for conference play.

“You wanna get points in every game. You wanna get three points for a win and one point for the draw,” DeAugustino said. “It’s a good start to the conference season.”

The Yellow Jackets have not won a match against Westminster in over 14 years and only have one other instance of a 0-0 tie against Westminster since the turn of the century.

“I think we are excited to get a result on the road for the start of the season,” junior midfielder Hailey Gilchrest said. “Getting our result was good.”

Freshman Jessi Jury in the 26th minute had the first shot of the night for Waynesburg, but the shot was saved by Westminster goalkeeper Morgan Murphy.

Waynesburg had nine shots, one shot on goal and five corner kicks, while Westminster managed three shots, two on goal.

“At the half, we talked about settling in and relaxing,” DeAugustino said. “Just going out there playing our game with joy and appreciating the opportunities we get.”

Junior goalkeeper Alexus Greenlief had two saves at the end of the first half and ended the night with a total of five.

“Greenlief played some really good soccer to start the year,” DeAugustino said. “She makes the big saves and wants to prove that she can be the best goalkeeper in our conference.”

In the second period, Westminster had three shots on goal, all saved by Greenlief. Westminster senior forward Amanda Lewis blistered a shot on goal in the 58th minute that was stopped by a phenomenal diving save by Greenlief to keep the game tied.

“I think it’s important to stay calm,” Greenlief said. “I play better when I’m calm and I know that I have the best defensive line in the PAC in front of me. If I know that they’re gonna do their thing, then I’m gonna do my thing as goalkeeper.”

Gilchrest provided three shots on goal in the second half. With ten seconds left on the clock, Gilchrest sent a shot to the low left corner of the goal, but was stopped by Murphy.

“I knew towards the end of the game that we needed results, so I was just putting up shots,” Gilchrest said. “With me being out last season, I prioritize every last moment because you never know if it’s your last game. So I make the most of every game and every minute that I’m given.”

Jury and reigning PAC Newcomer of the Week award recipient, Miracle Hershey, each had a hand in yesterday’s game and recent performance.

“They have been doing some pretty great things out there,” DeAugustino said. “Hershey is no stranger to competition, she’s a competitor and tries to get better every day. Jury has stepped up and was a Newcomer of the Week as well.”

Jury leads the PAC with five assists on the year.

“She is very good with combination plays and not being selfish out there,” Gilchrest said.

Waynesburg finished the night with 23 shots, with 11 shots on goal and seven corner kicks.

The Yellow Jackets return to action as Bethany College travels to John F. Wiley Stadium this Saturday at 4 p.m.
