Waynesburg Women’s Soccer battles W&J

The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team drew a 2-2 tie against Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium in Washington. The Yellow Jackets are now 2-0-2 in conference play.

“I think we need to finish the opportunities we get in a game,” junior Julz Mohrbacher said. “Coach DeAugustino talks to us about the importance of closing out games. We need to just be calmer towards the end of games instead of being chaotic.”

W&J freshman Rylin Bugosh found the back of the net in the 28th minute with a shot that sailed over the head of Waynesburg’s goalkeeper Alexus Greenlief.

“Unfortunately for us, they had a couple quality moments in there to score,” head coach George DeAugustino said. “They broke us down, credit to W&J.”

In the 42nd minute, Reagan Mittendorf had a free kick and sent a pass to Mohrbacher to tie the game up on a header. Mittendorf has now assisted on four of Mohrbacher’s 10 goals this year.

“With that goal, we both just looked at each other and she said ‘go’ and I just went and smacked it off my head into the goal,” Mohrbacher said. “It’s just sorta this intuition we have with each other and we know how each other play.”

At the end of the half, the Yellow Jackets had 10 shots to the Presidents five. Two of which were shots on goal for Waynesburg.

During the second half, the Yellow Jackets were collecting shots on goal but couldn’t get to the back of the net due to W&J’s junior goalkeeper Molly Schoch. Sophomore Amanda Pepe had two shots in the second half that were blocked.

“We had to drive and break through their line,” Pepe said. “I was focused on driving forward and getting myself into position for 1v1 moves, which is why I had more shots than I normally do. It’s unfortunate that two of my shots on goals didn’t go in, but that happens.”

In the 81st minute, sophomore Brynn Kirby had a corner kick and sent a pass to Mohrbacher who kicked it over the head of Schoch to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead. Mohrbacher leads the conference with 23 points and is in second place in goals with 10.

“Kirby did a great job today,” DeAugustino said. “We needed someone that’s a ball winner today in the middle and that’s one of her strengths .Brynn stepped up today and we are super proud of her and the progress she has made this year.

Waynesburg finished the game with nine corner kicks.

In the 89th minute, sophomore Abby Ngugi chased in pursuit of Bugosh to defend the ball, but Bugosh bounced the ball past Ngugi and Greenlief to the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the game at 2-2. It was the first time this year that Waynesburg gave up more than one goal in a game.

With 30 seconds remaining on the clock, Pepe passed the ball to Mittendorf and she fired a shot to the goal, but was caught by Schoch.

“Reagan and I would come together on the field and say what we need to fix,” Pepe said. “We go at it as we are going to fix it ourselves without asking coach DeAugustino, which is something he likes.”

Waynesburg University will return to John F. Wiley Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 8th as they will host 0-4 Thiel College. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Tomcats on the road last year in the regular season, 8-0.

“It was an unfortunate tie today,” Mohrbacher said. “However, we can definitely get three points next game.”
