Women’s Soccer falls just short in PAC Championship

The Waynesburg University Women’s Soccer team lost to Grove City College in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship yesterday, 1-0.

“We played the whole game and didn’t quit,” goalkeeper Lex Greenlief said. “We were in it until the end. We gave ourselves a chance and it didn’t go the way we wanted it to.”

Grove City took early control and applied pressure to the Waynesburg defense.

“I think after the first 20 minutes or so we didn’t have the ball much,” senior captain Reagan Mittendorf said. “I think we started to figure it out at the end of the first half. At halftime, we talked about what we saw and applied changes.”

In the 6th minute, Greenlief made a sensational diving save to prevent a shot by Tori Stevenson to keep the game scoreless.

“She’s an absolute gamer, and she stepped up,” head coach George DeAugustino said about Greenlief. “She’s made the all-tournament team for a reason. She made some really incredible saves and it kept us in the game.”

In the 14th minute, Lauren Muhanna received a pass from Kiara White and fired a shot to the top left corner of the goal past Greenlief.

Lauren Muhanna takes a quick feed from Kiara White and scores to give Grove City the first goal of the PAC Championship.

“The goal that was given up wasn’t her fault,” DeAugustino said. “It was unfortunate we couldn’t get one or two goals in the other goal for her to honor that performance.”

Julz Mohrbacher had the potential equalizer in the 27th minute. The ball banged off the crossbar and was swatted away from behind the goal line by Grove City’s goalkeeper, Maddie Mills.

Julz Morbacher comes inches away from tying it up, but Grove City’s Maddie Mills kept it out.

“The way it hit off the crossbar, it seemed to be down and into the goal,” Mittendorf said. “I have hit a lot of crossbars like that. I think just because it didn’t hit the net necessarily, he didn’t say it went in.”

Grove City’s defense prevailed in the first half by limiting the Yellow Jackets to only six shots, five of them being on goal. The Wolverines had 12 shots, with seven being on goal. Greenlief provided six saves. Mills had five saves for Grove City. Waynesburg had no corner kicks, while Grove City had three.

Waynesburg took control of the ball in the second half with nine shots. The defense stood its ground by limiting the Wolverines’ possession of the ball.

“Greenlief kept them in the game,” Grove City head coach Melissa Lamie said. “She did a great job back there and made some big saves for them. Unfortunate for us.”

Greenlief compiled a season high in saves with ten.

“She always has great saves,” Mittendorf said. “She always seems to play well at Grove City.”

The numbers back it up, as Greenlief’s freshman season saw her season best in saves with ten, and sophomore year was her season and career high with 16.

Grove City has won the PAC Women’s Soccer Championship three years in a row and has 10 all-time conference titles.

“Any time you play in a championship, it’s pretty cool,” Lamie said. “We were not thinking of this being the third in a row that we have to win. We focused on what’s in front of us and took advantage of the opportunity we had. Facing Waynesburg again, I knew it wasn’t going to be like the first.”

After the match, Greenlief and Miracle Hershey were named to the 2025 PAC All-Tournament Team.

“I was excited to hear that after the game,” Greenlief said. “It feels good to get any recognition, especially on that big of a stage. It was a big deal.”

DeAugustino is still very proud of the team and the season they had.

“Super proud of the group for the fight,” DeAugustino said. “We had an incredible run in the conference. 15 wins overall and 13 shutouts, that’s a phenomenal year. It’s something special and I’m truly proud of the group.”
