Waynesburg Athletics - Kevin Kincer On Nov. 15, the Waynesburg men’s wrestling team will be traveling to New York to take apart in a tri match against St. John Fisher and Alfred State.
With head coach Bobby Patnesky and the wrestlers all having a week off from wrestling they will still be practicing throughout this time before they leave again.
“Just like any other match, we need to wrestle hard and enjoy the process,” Patnesky said.
Waynesburg’s first match will be against St. John Fisher. Waynesburg wrestled against St. John Fisher in the 2023-24 season. They lost that match 37-12.
Returning Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion Jessie Orbin picked up the win by a major decision over sophomore Nathan Coon who is now a senior.
Orbin is planning to go back there with the dominance he has shown for the past three years.
“I am excited to wrestling before we go on break,” Orbin said. “We got two tough teams to wrestle in St. John Fisher and Alfred State. I want to open my offence and score a lot of points.”
The second team, Waynesburg will be wrestling there is Alfred State. This will be the first time these two teams have met.
“There are two tough teams, so we just need to be ready to go on the first whistle,” Patnesky said.
Orbin said that this tri match will not affect him or his season at all.
“We are just starting the season, and I have some rust to still knock off,” Orbin said. “I’m not in February shape, I am still here in November.”
Orbin who comes into the tri match as a top three wrestler in his own weight class is looking past this tri match. He knows it is going to be a tough match, and he is taking one match at a time, but this tri match is not his goal.
“I expect to make it to nationals as a top three wrestler,” Orbin said. “I expect to win the regional title as well. I am coming for it all and I want the competition.”
Patnesky is going into the tri match with a very calm mindset ready for the matches and his wrestlers dominate.
“We need a competition so we can keep our weights under control and keep our skills sharp before break,” Patnesky said. The first match is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. in Alfred, NY.
