Women’s Basketball beats Franciscan, goes on 34-0 scoring run

Waynesburg University Women’s Basketball picked up the win in the first game of conference play against Franciscan University on Dec. 4. Senior guard Kalista Friday with a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the way.

“Kalista is the engine that keeps us running,” head coach Sam Jones said. “She scores, she rebounds, and she had a double-double for us tonight.”

Friday, coming off a Presidents’ Athletic Conference player of the week, finished with another strong performance.

“Playing aggressively is a big part of my playstyle,” Friday said. “I like to say the least you can do is try.”

Along with Friday, Waynesburg had multiple other double-digit performances. Senior Clara-Paige Miller scored 12 points and had 13 rebounds. Junior guard Mia Henkins finished with 12 points as well, along with junior guard Kara McFadden and junior forward Julz Mohrbacher scoring 12 each.

“We definitely had a lot of contributions from lots of different places,” Jones said. “It was a good team win.”

Early in the second, leading into the third quarter, Waynesburg capitalized on a 34-0 run, capped off by a and-one layup from Mohrbacher.

“We held them scoreless for 14 minutes and 42 seconds,” Jones said. “I think our attention to detail was outstanding.”

Waynesburg, victorious 78-59, wants to look to build off this and carry it into their next game.

Having to face a tough defense and well-rounded team that they split with 1-1 last year is a tough challenge.

“We have Saint Vincent coming up,” Jones said. “Saint Vincent puts a lot of pressure on the basketball both half court and full court.”

Waynesburg will compete on Dec. 6. against Saint Vincent in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
