Professional sports are always changing, and one thing that seems to be happening more often is retired athletes deciding to come back and play again. While I understand why fans get excited when a well-known player comes out of retirement, I personally think it can be bad for the league. When older, established athletes return, they can take opportunities away from younger players who are trying to make a name for themselves.

One of the biggest examples of this is Aaron Donald. Donald retired from the NFL after the 2023 season. Donald spent 10 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. During his career, he became one of the best defensive players in NFL history. He won Defensive Player of the Year three times, was named a first-team All-Pro eight times and won a Super Bowl with the Rams.

After being away from football for more than two years, Donald decided to return to the Rams for the 2026 season. Ishani Jayara reported for Yahoo Sports about the original sighting of Donalds at the Rams practice facility in an article titled, “‘It Is Done’: Aaron Donald’s NFL Return Confirmed After Rams Workout, Says 3x Super Bowl Champion.”

Jayara stated, “Aaron Donald showed up at the Rams’ practice facility, and cameras caught him doing a lot more than just saying hello to old teammates. A video from July 10 shows him putting himself through what looked like a genuine, intense, on-field trial workout on the field.”

His comeback is definitely exciting for Rams fans, but I think it also brings up some questions about how teams are choosing to build their rosters.

Donald is already a proven player. The Rams know what he is capable of, and they know that having him on the team could help them win. However, bringing him back also means that another player, most likely a younger athlete, could lose out on a chance to get playing time or even make the roster. There are young players coming into the NFL every year who are hoping to prove that they belong. When teams continue bringing back familiar stars, those opportunities can become harder to find.

I think one of the biggest reasons athletes are coming out of retirement is because teams are focused on winning right now. Instead of taking a chance on an inexperienced player, it can seem safer to bring back someone who has already been successful. There is also the entertainment side of it. Fans are more likely to get excited about seeing a legendary player return than watching an unknown rookie take the field.

I can also understand why athletes choose to come back. Retirement is a huge change, and some players may realize that they still miss competing. After spending years playing the sport they love, it probably is not easy to completely walk away.

Still, I think professional leagues need to make sure they are giving young athletes opportunities. Comeback stories are fun to watch, but sports are also about creating the next generation of stars. Aaron Donald coming back may be exciting for the NFL, but I think it is important not to let the excitement surrounding a familiar name take away opportunities from players who could become the next big thing.
