The Waynesburg University women’s tennis team continued Presidents’ Athletic Conference play as they battled Bethany College. Bethany edged out the Yellow Jackets 5-4 Friday at Bethany.

Going into the match, head coach Ron Headlee knew it was going to be close from the start.

“We knew it was going to be close after our number one sophomore Kyleigh Schmidt is out with an injury,” Headlee said. “We were in the matches we just couldn’t pull through and losing your number one is hard to make up so we certainly had to take on of the doubles.”

The six traveling Jackets that played in the single matches were: seniors Lauren Wadsworth, Noelle Hughes, Sierra Stevens, junior Abby Walbrown and freshman duo Hayley Sweeney and Madison Trent.  

Despite the result, Headlee was pleased with the team’s performance.

 “I thought the team played well, especially the four five and six spots on the team who have been doing well all year dominated all of their matches today,” Headlee said. “We are getting a little better from last year where we dropped all sets to Bethany.”

Sweeney, Walbrown and Stevens all picked up victories for the Jackets, winning 6-0 and 6-0 in both sets to pick up three points for the Jackets.

After losing their one, Wadsworth took over the spot and Headlee was happy with the performance she had.

“That is the best I have seen Wadsworth play especially against their number one,” Headlee said. 

For the doubles competition, the Jackets’ pairs were Trent and Hughes, Sweeney and Wadsworth and as well as Stevens and junior Katie Dollard. Sweeney and Wadsworth secured a point for the Jackets winning their match, 8-1.

The Jackets will compete in the last match of the season against the number two PAC team Washington and Jefferson College  Saturday Oct. 12.
