Westminster’s physicality was too much to handle for Waynesburg (1-7, 0-2 PAC) as the Yellow Jackets  lost to the Titans, 81-69 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference matchup at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The win keeps the Titans undefeated on the young season.

“They’re very physical and [play good defense],” Waynesburg coach Sam Jones said. “Getting good looks at the hoop was difficult for us because of their size. Obviously, the rebounding battle is always a tough one versus them.”

Waynesburg was out rebounded 47 to 44. That’s an improvement since the Jackets’ rebounding margin coming into the game was -9.7. Jones knows what his team needs to work on to continue to improve on the boards. 

“Just intensity, and focus on attention to detail,” Jones said. “Which we did a better job tonight, we just got to be more consistent with it.”

Junior guard Andrea Orlosky knew limiting Westminster’s rebounding would be a challenge. 

“We just crashed the boards,” Orlosky said. “Even if the post got it, we just had to get down there and crash the boards and try to help our teammates out with that.”  

Both teams had balanced scoring. Westminster had six players in double figures, with senior forward Kayla Bennett leading the charge at 17 points. Waynesburg had five players in double figures. Orlosky led the way with a season-high 16 points. Senior guard Alli Delaney contributed with 14 points for the Jackets, with nine of those points coming on three pointers.

Orlosky complimented Westminster on its physicality. 

“I think they’re just a really powerful and strong team,” Orlosky said. “They took advantage of us since we’re a smaller team. Their size definitely had a big role in [the win] today.”

With Orlosky playing well, Jones said, the Yellow Jackets offense had more opportunities to strike. 

“When she’s contributing that just means other things are open,” he said. “Andrea going off certainly helps us gets us going in the right direction.”

Orlosky believes Waynesburg played well defensively, and as a result, she expects the second match-up with the Titans to be different, so long as the offense improves. 

“Our offense was our biggest default today,” Orlosky said. “Offensively I think we just need to figure out what to do better, specifically [against]  their team and seeing that they have two big posts and then [see] what we can do with our guards.”

Waynesburg’s next game is 2 p.m. Wednesday at Carnegie Mellon.
