LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 22) – The Waynesburg University Yellow Jackets volleyball team (2-9, 0-2 Presidents’ Athletic Conference) lost to the Saint Vincent College Bearcats (7-3, 1-1) in three sets on Thursday.

While losing the first set 25-11, Waynesburg kept it within at most four points for the next two sets 25-21 in the second and 25-22 in the third.

Junior Trysten Smith led the team with 18 assists on the night. Smith said the team’s main struggle was self-inflicted wounds.

“I think the biggest change that we made was just focusing on ourselves and limiting our own errors,” Smith said. “We made many mistakes in that first set that we could have controlled. Once we cleaned it up, we were able to be more competitive in the second and third sets.”

Smith also mentioned how this year’s volleyball team is very young.

“I think it’s important to note that we are a pretty young team overall,” Smith said. “Because of that, there are many instances in a game where we play inconsistently.”

However, as can be seen with our closer scores in sets, we are slowly gaining confidence and becoming more consistent with our play. Once we work out all of the kinks, I’m excited to see what we can do in conference play.”

Freshman Paige Mortimore led the team with eight kills along with two blocks and junior Mickayla Baniaga had 34 digs and two aces for the Yellow Jackets.
