A new educational wellness series by “Essentially Yours,” featuring essential oils and their uses, is now taking place in Waynesburg. The series, called “Thankful Thursdays,” had its second session Thursday at 6 p.m., and will continue to meet at the same time the first Thursday of each month.
The cost to participate in “Thankful Thursdays” is $5, and the sessions will take place in the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds, with the exception of October’s meeting, which will meet at the Alpha Aquatic Water Park.
The sessions will have different activities based on a new focus each month. This month, the focus was aromatherapy jewelry, and participants made their own bracelets with lavastone and clear and frosted quartz beads. The themes for the next few months will be Make-Over your Laundry Room, Beautify Naturally and Christmas Make and Take Workshop. All of the sessions will include projects for participants to complete and take home for use.
Kelly Mackey, a wellness advocate for doTERRA, an essential oils company, is the instructor for the sessions. Mackey has been working for doTERRA, for almost two years, and said that working there has given her knowledge about essential oils and their benefits.
Mackey said she was interested in beginning these sessions partly because of the recent interest she has seen people take in essential oils and their uses.
“With essential oils becoming more common and up and coming now, people are very interested in them, so [the sessions are] just a common ground place for people to get together and begin to learn more and learn from each other about their benefits and uses,” Mackey said.
One of Mackey’s main goals is safety, as essential oils can be very potent.
“I want people to learn how to use them safely and wisely, but [also make sure] that they do use them because they do have benefits to you,” Mackey said.
Those who come to the sessions will also get a chance to discover which oils their body responds to best, via an iTOVi scan, a device which measures the frequency response in a person’s body. Any participant’s first iTOVi scan is free and each succeeding scan is $10.
Mackey said the sessions will continue as long as there is interest, and she is already brainstorming creative ideas for upcoming “Thankful Thursdays.”
“We can always learn different ways to use [essential oils] and to incorporate them into our daily lives,” Mackey said.
To encourage attendance at the events, Essentially Yours has included rewards cards. Each time someone attends a session, they get a mark on their card, and they will receive free items and essential oils deals after attending five, 10 and 20 sessions.
All those who wish to go to the sessions must pre-register by calling the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323.
