Fairgrounds ends summer with flea market

From 7 a.m.to 2 p.m. every Tuesday and Saturday, flea markets are held at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Vendors are located in the #9 Auction Building, the Midway or under the Grandstand.

There were not many early tables up upon the 7 a.m. open time, but Heidi Sharpless and Shelly Rocha took their businesses to the flea market. “The Crafty Sisters” are the owners of small businesses Just a Nurse’s Hobby and Cranberry Creative.

It is the first year Sharpless and Rocha have taken their businesses to the flea market after beginning their crafts this summer.

“We have been doing craft fairs… and we found this on Facebook,” Rocha said.

Sharpless began her business Cranberry Creative in March of 2023. Her business is primarily focused on creating Macrame, epoxy resin tumblers, key chains and plenty more.

Rocha is a full time registered nurse that began her business, Just a Nurse’s Hobby, in January of this year. As a full-time registered nurse, any spare time she has Rocha likes to sit down and allow her creativity to flow.

Upon an early setup time, a West Virginia native John Simpson had a few tables set up.

“I try to have enough items that anyone that comes in can pick up and consider buying,” Simpson said.

The tables were full of tools, dishes, puzzles, car parts, and childrens books.

Simpson found out about the flea markets just a few weeks ago and wanted to give it a try. “I had been to a few flea markets before,” Simpson said. “But I never thought to bring my own items and set up my own tables.”

When he was asked how to encourage people to come and check out a flea market or start their own table Simpson simply said, “It is just a good way to get out of the house and find some cheap items to use.”

For those that are interested in vending, Tuesday setups come with a fee and Saturday setup is free for anybody.
