Grove City Keeps Waynesburg Winless in PAC Play

The Waynesburg University volleyball team fell to Grove City, 3-1 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Jackets have now lost 19 consecutive matches to the Wolverines win their last win coming  Oct. 15, 2009.

After losing the second set 25-7, Waynesburg won the third set 30-28 after Grove City came back from a 24-18 deficit. Waynesburg lost the first set by a score of 25-15, and Waynesburg lost the final set 25-19.

The women showed head coach Hayley Kirby their maximum effort when they battled back to win the third set.

“We worked really hard,” Kirby said. “We kept fighting and we have the fight in us to finish sets like that.”

Junior outside hitter Hannah Colvin led all players with 16 kills and was second on Waynesburg with 19 digs. Colvin wanted to make improvements to her game after Waynesburg lost its first two sets, which helped the Jackets win the third set.

“I really just focused on reducing my personal errors, and trying to step up as a bigger voice, and being encouraging throughout the game,” Colvin said.

Other contributors for Waynesburg was senior defensive specialist Alyssa Proper, who tallied 20 assists, and sophomore defensive specialist Alyson Johnson, who recorded 20 digs. Proper also led Waynesburg with three aces.

For Grove City, junior outside hitter Elisabeth Sems led the Wolverines with nine kills. Sophomore setter Cassidy Kohmann carried Grove City with 33 assists.

Kirby felt her team was much sharper mentally in the third set.

“We were a lot smarter in where we were putting the ball, and how we were hitting,” Kirby said ”We were still hitting aggressively but it was more purposeful. I think in the first [two] sets we were kind of just putting the ball in play and not doing anything with a purpose.”

For Colvin, there was a lot of improvement from the Jackets in the third set.

“We just minimized our own errors,” Colvin said. “We picked up our communication, and we focused on keeping the ball in play, and putting it in spots we knew were open.”

Waynesburg is now 2-14 overall and last in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference at 0-6. Waynesburg’s next match is Saturday, when they travel to Latrobe to battle the St. Vincent Bearcats at 11 a.m.
