Lady Jackets close out regular season with win vs Franciscan

Carried two-game win streak into PAC tournament

The 2020-2021 regular season ended on a high note for the Waynesburg University Women’s basketball team on Tuesday March 9th. The Lady Jackets defeated  Franciscan University 75-53 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Waynesburg improved to  2-7  on the season after leading the entire game while Franciscan fell to 1-8.  

Yellow Jackets coach Sam Jones was proud that the team dominated the Barons in the paint, and looks forward to the playoffs.

“Overall very happy with the effort, the attention to detail, and it was great to get the win back to back,” he said. “We were dominating inside and that was the plan. We’re happy that we’re playing well, and we’re excited moving forward.”  

The Yellow Jackets led the Barons 10-2 just over three minutes into the first quarter. Waynesburg would carry the lead into halftime, leading Franciscan 43-28. The Lady Jackets lead by 27 points in the fourth quarter before the 75-53 final score.

Waynesburg excelled in rebounding and shooting, going just under 40 percent in successful field goals and out rebounding Frabciscan 64-32. 

Junior center Brooke Fuller led the Yellow Jackets offense, even though she was coming off the bench. Fuller scored 18 points and collected 19 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action.  

“It feels so good because I feel like we’re hitting a peak at the right time,” Fuller said. “My team keeps looking into me. I feel like they believe in me, so that’s a good feeling.” 

Senior guard Andrea Orlosky had a double-double for the second game in a row with 13 points and 15 rebounds after scoring her 1000th point in the win over Thiel College on March 6th. Junior forward Abigail Green and Freshman guard Marley Wolf both added double digit scoring efforts for the Yellow Jackets.

Freshman forward Sophie Larose led Franciscan with a double-double, scoring 16 points and getting 17 boards. The Barons had a total of three players register double digit scoring. 

The win marked a two game win streak for Waynesburg and created a rematch from March 6. The Yellow Jackets hosted the Thiel College Tomcats to begin the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament as the eighth seed on Saturday March 13th.
