The Waynesburg University men’s and women’s golf teams completed their first tournament of the season at the Westminster Fall Invitational.

The women competed on Aug. 29 and finished fourth in a seven-team field with sophomore Ally Wolling leading the score with a 26 over par score of 97 and notching an 11th place finish in the 38-woman field.

“I am just super happy to be back on the course and playing my game with my teammates,” Wolling said. “I want to keep practicing and working hard on the parts of my game that I struggle with and also just staying calm and not rushing myself during the round.”

Behind her was junior Abigail Noble with a 39 over par score of 110, finishing in 21st place. Sophomore Lexi Schmadel scored 111 and sophomore Emmarson Anderson rounded out the scoring with a 113. Sophomore Leigha Clapper and Autumn Bartos competed as individuals with scores of 119 and 148.

“I was encouraged by the results. Wolling finished three spots higher [than last year] and Schmadel and Anderson moved up 15 and eight spots, respectively,” head coach Michael Cipoletti said. “This group is getting more experience with every event, but they are still a young team. The improvement we’re seeing is because they are all working very hard in practice.”

Men’s golf started the season off strong with a ninth-place finish at the Westminster Fall Invitational on Aug. 31 with a team score of 332. 

Junior Alan Tarolli finished first for the Yellow Jackets with a five over par score of 77, which slotted him at eighth place out of 89 golfers in the event. Freshman Dominic Benamati followed with a 12-over 84 which put him at a tie for 31st place.

“Tarolli always puts expectations on himself to be our top finisher, everyone else around the league just expected [Matt] Karpeal to be the top guy,” Cipoletti said. “As you can see though, Tarolli rolls into a course he’s never played and rips off an eighth place finish that is only five strokes off the lead to a bunch of guys that have played that course multiple times, an impressive day for him.”

Freshman Jon Burshiem finished one stroke behind Benamati with an 85. Junior Braden Benke completed the Waynesburg scoring four with an 86.

Freshmen Chase Werthman and Ethan Bare carded a 91 and 94, respectively.

Waynesburg men’s and women’s golf are back in action on Sept. 8 at Greene County Country Club for their own event of the Jacket Tri-Valley Classic.
