Men’s basketball holds prospect camp over the weekend

Waynesburg University’s men’s masketball team hosted its first session of the Elite Camp onSaturday, Sept. 14. The camp was open to high school student athletes, grades ninth through twelve.

The camp started off with the Waynesburg’s players checking the highschoolers in and handing out jerseys. Moving on from there, hey then began to run a five on five tournament amongst the highschoolers.

Assistant Coach, Tom Weiler spoke about the structure camp.

“For this camp, we focused solely on gameplay. Campers were split into teams and we ran a five on five tournament, resulting in the championship rounds for first, third, and fifth place,” Weiler said. “The format definitely contributed to the competitiveness and value of every game.”

Weiler continued to speak about the competitiveness shown by some of the possible prospects present during the camp..

”We definitely had a lot of talent in the gym and it was a very competitive day. Some names we were already familiar with and some who are now added to our list,” Weiler said. “There were student-athletes representing the 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028 classes from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida and Oregon. We can’t wait for our October camp to see more action on our home court.”

The highschoolers then got a tour of campus, with Head Coach Tim Fusina also commenting on the operations of the camp.

“Our athletes showed the camp participants around campus. We will show as much of campus as we can,” Fusina said. “We will not be showing dorms to maintain the privacy of all of our students. We will show dorms to recruits on individual visits.”

Overall, Weiler concluded by commenting on the feelings of the campers.

“It was a great day of camp. Our primary goal for the day was to give our campers the best possible look into our school and basketball program,” Weiler said. “I think our campers left with a much better understanding of what’s going on over here at Waynesburg, and what the demands of college basketball are like.”

“The camp is beneficial to our staff because we get to evaluate our recruits in person in our gym. It also allows our recruits to see campus and see what practice is like,” Fusina said. “It also provides them a great opportunity to meet our current athletes. “

The Jackets will be holding another session on Oct. 5,at the Rudy Marisa Feildhouse for $100 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
