Men’s golf hits the halfway point of the fall season

Men’s golf enters their mid-season break after a victory at the Golden Eagles Invitational at Oak Shadows Golf Club in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Placing ahead of seven different teams, including Presidents’ Athletic Conference foes Geneva and Bethany, the win notched a vital win for the Jackets as the near the end of the season.

“Any time you get a win in an invitational, it’s a big deal because of the number of opponents,” head coach Michael Cipoletti said. “I think it gives the team confidence that they can compete against anyone in our league.” 

The team started the season off on Sept. 3 at the Geneva Fall Opener and being two of two, with individuals scoring high, it showed promise when talking to coaches and players. 

Following the opener, travel to Wheeling, WV on Sept. 10 for the Bison Fall Invite scoring as a team second out of eight teams, was a succession of that promise earlier in the season.

With the Saint Vincent invitational on Sept. 16 in Latrobe landing fourth out of 10 teams, the team continued to progress as individuals and a team. 

Finally capitalizing on the progression at the Golden Eagles Invite by winning the overall tournament and having the top two golfers.

“I think we are doing great and we’re still growing as a team and we go into these tournaments all wanting to do good and try to win,” freshman Alan Tarolli said. “Some of our players aren’t having their best rounds right now, but what’s important is that they’re practicing and trying to get back on track.”

Ahead for the Yellow Jacket team is their own invitational hosted at Nemacolin Country Club. Teeing off at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, coach Cipoletti looks forward to the event.

“It’s always nice to win the event you host, but really I’m just looking for our guys to play well on a difficult track,” Ciopletti said. “It’s not really our home course, so we don’t necessarily have a home-field advantage over the other teams competing.” 

Teams within the Presidents’ Athletic Conference joining in the tournament include Grove City, Bethany, Geneva and Saint Vincent. Largest collection of PAC teams in a golf tournament this season according to Waynesburg University’s athletic page.

Following the Waynesburg Invitational, the men will travel to Grove City Country Club for the Grove City Invitational to finish out the Yellow Jackets regular season play on Oct. 3.

Finally, the men trek over to Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio for the PAC Fall Championship between Oct. 14 and Oct. 15. 

“PAC’s are right around the corner, and we want to use this event [Waynesburg Invitational] and Grove City’s event to get ourselves into championship mode.” Cipoletti said.

Tee times for the championship are still to be announced, with many individuals of the Yellow Jacket team looking to make a push for medalist honors for.
