Waynesburg Athletics This past Monday, April 6, the men’s golf team at the Thiel Invitational in Sharon, Pa.
The team placed fifth out of 11 teams, carding a score of 313. Senior Matt Karpel scored a 74 tying with two other players for eighth place.
Sophomore Braden Benke scored five over par for a total score of 75, placing him in a four-way tie for 11th.
Benke said his performance in the match was a really good, especially with the terrain of the course.
“Everything was clicking,” Benke said. “Played everything long on the course which I think covered more ground. Had a few holes with bogeys out of the sand with the small greens. But felt good to get a good round in.”
Benke said the conditions lead to a challenge throughout the day but was still able to manage despite the weather.
“It was cold then sunny then it rained and sleeting. Hard to adapt and block out the weather mid round when the greens got a little wetter and slow,” Benke said. |Course wise, I feel all putts didn’t break on the green. Everything pretty much stayed straight or had a tad bit of break.”
Sophomore Alan Tarolli said the team is getting into a grove as the season progresses.
“We’re just trying to get into the groove after coming out of winter. We have just been practicing and been getting more comfortable playing again,” Tarrolli said.
The next matchup for the team is the Bethany Spring Invitational, at Oglebay Park Wheeling, W.Va. Start time is scheduled for 11 a.m.
