Yellow Jackets Tennis fights back for first win of season

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Waynesburg University Women’s tennis team faced off against the Pitt Greensburg Bobcats at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility for their first home match of the year. The Yellow Jackets’ took a 5-2 win over the Bobcats. This marks the first time the women have their first home opener since 2018.

Freshman Gabby Peiritsh had a dominant performance at the No. 5 singles spot. She took down her opponent by a final of 6-1, 6-0. This was the freshman’s first collegiate win.

“I think I played pretty well. There’s always room for improvement but overall I was happy with the way I played,” Peiritsh said. “I tried not to hold onto the previous point as much. For example if I lost a point, I focused on moving on and playing the point instead of focusing on the mistakes.”

The Bobcats came into this match riding a three-match winning streak that started off their season. Pitt-Greensburg will remain in first place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference with their 3-0 conference record.

Waynesburg made some major adjustments from their first match against Penn State Altoona.

“The girls started the match off with more energy and that carried over throughout the match,” head coach Randy Pettit said.

The Yellow Jackets have 14 matches scheduled for this season and they are excited to continue on.

“I’m excited to spend time with the team while we all get to play something we love,” Peiritsh said

Waynesburg will now look to their next match against Carlow. This will be its third straight non-conference opponent. The message going in continues to be consistent.

“Start off with high energy and communication. Trust in their teammates, themselves, and their abilities,” Pettit said.

Waynesburg and Carlow will play at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Highland Park Tennis Courts.
