Sara Clegg - The Yellow Jacket On Saturday, March 21, the Waynesburg University women’s softball team traveled to Washington, PA, to play in its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader of the season against the Washington & Jefferson Women’s softball team.
The team dropped the first game 4-2, but in the second game, they came back to win, 6-2.
“The layoff hurt us; we hadn’t played in over a week,” Brunson said. “Our bats came alive in the second game, and we started looking like ourselves.”
Waynesburg got on the board first in game one, going up 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but W&J matched that with a run of its own, the first of four unanswered runs.
Waynesburg got one back on an RBI single from sophomore Meysa Heitmann to make it 4-2, but that would be the final run of the game.
Freshman pitcher Emily Pratt took the loss, allowing four runs in five innings of work. Sophomore Pressly Meadows tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
Down 2-1 in the third inning of game two, Heitmann led off the inning with a single. Junior Jamie Kelly and senior Braylee Corbin hit back-to-back home runs to give Waynesburg a 4-2 lead.
Waynesburg added two more runs before the game was over on RBI doubles from Heitmann and sophomore Graeson Grubbs.
Heitmann went 4-4 in game two with a double, an RBI, and two runs.
“Going into the day, I think my biggest goal is to just hit the ball hard,” Heitmann said. “I think we’re in a good spot to go into PAC play. That first game was just us getting the jitters out, and now we’re feeling confident with our momentum.”
Sophomore Madison Baker pitched a complete game and only gave up two runs in the first inning. She ended her day with seven innings pitched, two strikeouts, and one walk. Baker said she looks to continue carrying her dominance on the mound throughout the season.
“It feels good to beat them for the first time since 2023,” Baker said. “From here on out, I just need to take one pitch at a time.”
With this win, the women’s softball team ends its five-game losing streak against Washington & Jefferson and beats them for the first time since 2023.
The Yellow Jackets travel up to Meadville, PA, to take on the Allegheny Gators on Tuesday, March 24 in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
