Softball sweeps first away PAC doubleheader

The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Meadville, Pennsylvania for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup against Allegheny College. Waynesburg swept Allegheny winning game one 8-3 and game two 11-9 in six innings due to darkness.

“It felt great knowing that we can beat these teams,” Junior shortstop Jamie Kelly said. “As a competitor myself, I hate losing. After leaving the game against W&J, we left knowing that we should have won that first game and should be undefeated in the PAC so far.”

Kelly drove in the first run of the game when she doubled to bring in Meysa Heitmann, giving the lead to the Yellow Jackets and they wouldn’t look back from there.

Sophomore second baseman Meysa Heitmann went 3 for 5 in the game where she scored twice and drive in two runs on two hits on the afternoon.

“When I am up to bat, I try to keep it as simple as possible,” Heitmann said. “Hitting is about being on time and having confidence. Walking up to the plate, I focus on being aggressive every single pitch. Keep it simple, be confidence and produce.”

Kelly and Heitmann weren’t the only ones who produced for the Yellow Jackets. Ten different Yellow Jackets drove in a run throughout the day.

“Our goal as a team, like it’s been all season, is to stay offensively strong at the plate,” Kelly said. “The main theme of this year is to play competitively but have fun. No matter what nine players are on the field, we all celebrate each other’s successes and are happy for each other.”

Waynesburg is currently 14-4 on the season and are 3-1 in conference play.

“The goal for our matchup against Pitt Greensburg tomorrow is to come out with two wins,” Heitmann said. “Non-conference games are games we need to take care of, be aggressive, play WU softball and come out with two more wins. The same goes for Grove City this weekend, our goal is to defend our home turf and grab two more wins.”

Waynesburg will play Pitt Greensburg at home on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Waynesburg will stay home this weekend for senior day festivities when they take on Grove City on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. as well.
