The Waynesburg University Yellow Jacket men’s soccer team finished their season missing the playoffs, ending with a 7-6-4 overall record and a 3-3-4 conference record.
The Jackets played their last game of the season against Grove City, who was the number two seed when the teams met. The Jackets would tie the Wolverines 1-1 and would get one PAC point, bringing their total points to 13. The Jackets would have clinched the sixth and final spot with the win.The lone goal was scored by junior Michael Kanu for his fifth goal on the year, and was assisted by senior Connor Jacobs.
The Jackets would then wait until later in the day to see what the Washington & Jefferson Presidents would do. If the Presidents would beat Westminster, they would be eliminated but if they tied or lost, the Jackets would squeak in.
Unfortunately, the Presidents would defeat the Titans 1-0, scoring in the last ten minutes of the match and knocking out the Jackets.
“Growth is definitely one of the pros. There is a lot of room for growth, and it’s insane how much growth you can see in yourself and in the team in such a short period,” said Kanu on the pros of the season. “Also getting to know the freshman class better and building a strong team camaraderie on and off the soccer field.”
The Jackets would finish second in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with goals with 39, behind only Francsican with 58. Freshman Sarpong Kwabiah would lead the jackets in goals with eight on the season.
Senior goalkeeper Michael Francus would record three shutouts and tally 86 saves on the year.
“I hope that we find a way to grow as a family,” said sophomore, Aidan Groves on the goals for the offseason. “Hope that our chemistry will show in relation to on the field success.”
