With finals approaching, Waynesburg University students have the opportunity to take advantage of the Day of Study, a dedicated time meant to support academic success. The University designates the Monday of finals week as the Day of Study.
The Day of Study provides students with a final, stress-free opportunity to review and study before final exams, with the day is also beneficial to tutors.
“It gives you [tutors] time to yourself to get your own work done and review for your finals,” said Jaime Emerson, academic support specialist.
According to Emerson and tutors, planning ahead is key to making the most of the day.
“The purpose of the Day of Study is just an opportunity to give students a chance to compile all of their information and study,” Emerson said. “It gives everyone time to themselves to get their work done with little to no conflicts.”
Emerson also said the Day of Study should serve as a final review period, not the start of preparation.
“A lot of students leave things until the Day of Study. It should be a wrap-up,” she said. “Treat the last week of classes as your prep time. Schedule tutoring appointments, draft study guides and collect what you need for finals.”
She offered additional tips for studying during finals week, such as make a study plan in advance, review notes and textbooks and ensuring students take care of themselves. Students should be aware of exam dates, times and locations and consider using study strategies like SQ3R—skim, question, read, recite and review.
“When students take care of themselves, they should eat proper meals, maintain an organized space and prioritize sleep,” Emerson said. “Sleep is when our brains commit what we studied to memory—so no sleep means no remembering during exams.”
“Start your studying early,” said Alexus Greenlief, a forensic investigation and criminal justice double major and university tutor. “Don’t wait until the last minute, because cramming won’t help you. If you need help, reach out to your professors or tutors early. Make sure you sleep well, eat well and stay active. Most importantly, stay positive.”
“You should make a schedule of all your projects and exams coming up,” said Amanda Sweeney, a finance major and tutor. “Then, any assignments or papers that can be done ahead of time—get them done. This allows you to focus on studying for the exams during finals.”
“Block out study time for each class, and allow yourself study breaks and rewards,” said Ashlyn Spina, a nursing major and tutor. “Do not stay up late cramming for an exam. You need adequate sleep, as well as nutrition.”
“My advice is to relax,” said Quin’lon DaGyn Williams, a chemistry major with a psychology minor and tutor. “Set time aside each day to study a little, starting a couple of weeks ahead. A little bit a day makes a huge difference. The day before the final, do light reviewing and go to bed early. The work is done—the rest takes care of itself.”
With a solid plan and self-care in mind, students can use the Day of Study to finish the semester strong.
