Waynesburg hosting annual 50s Fest over the weekend

Rev up your engines, grab your blue suede shoes, and slick back your hair because the 50s Fest & Car Cruise is back in town!

The 23rd annual 50s Fest & Car Cruise will take over Downtown Waynesburg on Saturday, Sept.14,, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Up and down High Street, there will look to be many isles of retro hot rods and classic chrome cars.

“’It’s a nice event that we are able to provide to the community for free, since we don’t charge cars to participate or anyone that attends,’” said Danielle Crooks, a co-chair of the 50s fest committee who works to organize the event. She also works with registration for the cars, venues during the event and merchandise sales.

“This also helps the downtown business because we are bringing traffic and people, so they can browse the stores and eat while down there,”  Crooks said.

Crooks’ family has been her support staff to help keep this event free of admission for both the car owners, as well as the people who attend this event.

“This year, I’m bringing my seventeen-year-old son involved, he helped by handling the sponsorships,” Crooks said.

Options will be open in specialty stores and venues along the road for prizes, giveaways and 50s-themed snacks. Many of them will be returning, such as the Greene County United Way with their raffle ticket pickup truck giveaway.

“They will be selling twenty-five-dollar tickets for their truck giveaway,” Crooks said. The Greene County United Way is an organization that resides in Greene County to help tackle crucial county issues.

While in attendance for this event, one can be immersed by the many sounds of the 50s provided by WANB’s Greaser, or DJ, Doug Wilson, also known on-air as, ‘Crazy Dougie.’ Wilson has been providing live music for this event since its inception.

Wilson does a live broadcast from the steps of the courthouse. Spectators can come up and request a song and not only would the song be played on the speakers, but for those who could not attend, they can tune in on WANB’s radio station to listen in.

“It’s a very unique event for Waynesburg,”  Wilson said, adding how this event is so important for some that they plan their other events around the 50s Fest. “We have a young lady who plans her vacation to coincide with 50 Fest.”

From bubble-blowing contests to hula hoop challenges, the 50s Fest & Car Cruise looks to continue in its tradition of bringing the people of Greene County and beyond together.“You just never know what you’ll see,” Wilson said.
