Vinnie Heller Earlier today, the Waynesburg University softball team swept a home Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against Thiel College with wins of 5-3 and 8-0.
The team has now won seven of its last eight games.
“We’ve come together as a team,” head coach Chris Brunson said. “Everybody is rooting for everybody. They’re playing their roles, and everyone is bought into that team concept.”
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one. In the second inning, sophomore Rylee Rohbeck and junior Jamie Kelly each had hits that plated a run.
“We’ve been getting some timely hitting,” Brunson said. “We didn’t have it there for a couple of doubleheaders.”
Freshman Morgan Walt threw a complete game in the circle, earning the win to improve her season record to 6-0.
In game two, freshman Emily Pratt also threw a complete game, allowing just three hits. She credited her success to her curveball and changeup.
“I can work my curveball and changeup in and out,” Pratt said. “I can throw them at all levels. I know how I can pitch, and once I progressed I felt like I was fine.”
Either Walt or Pratt has started in the circle each of the last five games.
“Emily [Pratt] and Morgan [Walt] have taken the bull by the horns,” Brunson said. “We’re pretty tough in the circle. I believe in pitching to our strengths.”
The Yellow Jackets put up three runs in the first inning of game two, never looking back. All of Waynesburg’s top six batters had at least one RBI.
In the field, Waynesburg did not commit a single error in either game. Senior outfielder Kassidy Trimble tracked down multiple long fly balls, limiting the Thiel offensive attack.
“I was trying to get everything I could, being a leader and a ball hawk,” Trimble said. “I was always taught to go get everything.”
Trimble thinks that the team knows what they need to do moving forward.
“We’re getting into a routine,” Trimble said. “We’re finding what works best for us.”
Waynesburg is back in action this Saturday at Hiram. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
