Tuesday night’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference volleyball matchup between Waynesburg and St. Vincent was hard-fought.
After an impressive win over Central State last week, the Yellow Jackets competed in PAC play against the Bearcats by winning the first set but came up short by dropping the next three sets consecutively to fall to 0-5 in conference play and 3-13 overall.
Senior outside hitter Jordyn Wyllie led Waynesburg with 11 kills, while fellow senior outside hitter Lexy Waldman racked up 10 kills along with an assist on the night.
Senior defensive specialist Cassidy Guiser took charge of the back row by accumulating 12 digs. Junior setter Olivia Zuchelli led Waynesburg’s offense with 38 assists, while also contributing defensively with 13 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Colvin had a solid game of her own, gathering 10 kills and one assist.
Head coach Hayley Kirby was impressed with what she’s seen from Wyllie and Zuchelli, in particular, as the season progresses on.
“They do really well together,” said Kirby. “Jordyn did really well with the sets she got towards the end of the game. Olivia got the ball out where it needed to be. She had 13 digs, which I think she should have had about 35 digs.”
Waynesburg’s defense struggled covering short hit balls or tips over the net as Kirby said most of the Bearcats’ points came off those kinds of plays.
“All Saint Vincent did was tip,” said Kirby. “Probably 75 percent of their kills were from tips, not from hard driven hits. That is what literally lost us the game. We could not pick it up.”
Sophomore outside hitter Mary Popp led the Bearcats with 16 kills and 3 blocks.
Senior setter Marisa O’Dell controlled the Bearcat offense dishing out 24 assists and attacking the net with seven kills.
“They definitely watched some of our film all they had to do was tip,” said Kirby. “They did not have to do anything special unfortunately. The first set we played great, but they figured out our plan,”
Saint Vincent had 50 kills against the Yellow Jackets while Waynesburg had 45.
“They executed their plan pretty well,” Kirby said.
Sophomore setter Alexis Phillips agreed that tips were a turning point.
“The tips are what killed us,” she said. “They came when we were not on our toes and ready.”
After watching Waynesburg take the opening set 25-21, Saint Vincent followed up by winning three straight sets to take the match. The Bearcats won 25-17 in the second before taking set three 25-14 and closing the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth set.
The win is Saint Vincent’s their third straight, which improves its PAC record to 3-1 and moves it to 7-7 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will finish their four-game road trip as the make a final stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to take on the Chatham Cougars in PAC play Sept. 27. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
