Women’s Soccer Salvages for a Late Draw

With just under two minutes left in the game the WaynesburgUniversity Yellow Jackets trail the Saint Vincent Bearcats 4-3. Freshman defender Waverly Lorne, takes three steps back and three steps to the left, and she raises her hand as she takes the long free kick. The kick bounces off the goalie and it goes in to tie the game with 91 seconds left.

The Waynesburg University women’s soccer team clashed against the Saint Vincent Bearcats for its third Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).

“It was a good battle, they are always good and are well coached,” said Head Coach George DeAugustino. “They had a good press and got numbers forward.”

The game went back and forth as each team at one point in the game was either winning, losing or tied.

This is the second straight meeting where both teams have ended the result with a draw. Last year’s result ended 0-0.

“We can not panic when we are down,” said Assistant Coach Emily Redman. “Just focus on the plan and we will get moving.”

“One word to describe this game would be resiliency,” said DeAugustino. “We were not done, after being down, and we found a way to put the ball in the back of the net.”

With the draw and the Westminster Titans lost to the Grove City Wolverines last night, the Yellow Jackets are now tied for first place in the PACalongside the Wolverines, as they passed the Titans who were the PAC Champions last year.

“The expectations are super high,” said junior forward Haley Johnson,. “Everyone gives 100%, we work so hard in practices and games.”

The Jackets are currently ranked third in the conference  in goals scored so far this year with 23. They are second in assists with 14.

Their next game will be at John F. Wiley Stadium on Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. against the Thiel College Tomcats, which will also be senior night for the Yellow Jackets

“They are a desperate team right now,” said DeAugstino. “Them being 0-3, and being at the top of the table, everyone wants to beat the best teams so we need to be creative and work on possession.”
