With just under 10 minutes left in the game, senior midfielder Kate James raises her hand as she prepares to take a corner kick. The Yellow Jackets are trailing 2-1 to the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. The kick goes, hits the ground and fellow senior midfielder Madey Hill lunges and scores to end the game on a 2-2 tie.
“It was a tough game,” said Head Coach George DeAugustino. “They are never easy to play against, and there is always going to be a good rivalry.”
The Yellow Jackets and Presidents have tied four of the last six games they have played.
Last night, the Westminster Titans defeated the Franciscan Barons with a score of 3-1. With that, as well as the Yellow Jackets result, Waynesburg currently sits in second place with five Presidents’ Athletic Conference games left.
“It feels amazing to see these girls put in the work and have that fire,” said Assistant Coach, Emily Redman. “They do not just want to fight for a postseason spot, but they want the top spot.”
The last time the Yellow Jackets were in the playoffs was in 2021 when they lost to the Presidents.
“We are in a really good spot and it feels good, ” DeAugustino said. “This is a new version of us and we are currently unbeaten too.”
The Yellow Jackets are currently ranked second in the conference in goals this year with 36 goals with James having been able to produce at least one point in the past six games.
James has one point in every PAC game so far this year, while also being tied in first place with assists in the conference with seven.
“At the end of the day we want a spot in the playoffs,” Hill siad. “We are proving to everyone that we are here to play.”
“I think we need to tune some things back up offensively and defensively,” Redman said. “ This will give us the edge and we’ll be as prepared as we can be for Allegheny.”
Last year the women’s team tied 1-1 at John F. Wiley Stadium against the Allegheny Gators with the goal coming from Hill.
Their next game will be in Meadville as they challenge the Gators at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4.
