Baseball team takes both games against Bethany

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets hosted the Bethany Bison in a neutral site in Morgantown, West Virginia on Sunday winning both games. 

Waynesburg started game one in the first getting a walk from junior Todd Burner and senior Mike Bell getting hit by a pitch to have runners on first and second.  

Junior Seth Burgdolt was able to advance the runners on a sacrifice fly leading to junior Alec Englemore getting a base hit, scoring two runs. 

Sophomore Ethan Erhard was on the mound for the Jackets and there would be action once the top of the third where the Bison would put up a two-run homer tying it 2-2. 

The Bison after the fifth inning extended their lead 5-2. 

In the top of the seventh freshman Mike McCready would come in for Erhard and stall the Bison to keep the score 5-2. It wouldn’t be till the bottom of the seventh that the Jackets scored again. 

The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with no outs with freshman Trent Giraffa would hit a ground ball to third and the Bison would take them out at first, and the Jackets would score one making it 5-3. 

Senior Lane Ours would head to the plate with runners on second and third and would blast the ball over the left field wall granting Waynesburg a 6-5 lead. 

“A lot of emotions flaring up, It is always a big rivalry between us and Bethany,” Ours said. 

When asked about his emotions on the play. “ They gave me a fastball down the middle and I capitalized on it and I’m glad I got to help the team out,” Ours said. 

McCready would make quick work of the Bison to finish out the game and he would achieve his first collegiate win. 

“I know our team is a good hitting team, just had to go out there and throw strikes and trust my defense, and I knew our hitting would do their job,” McCready said. 

The Jackets started game two with sophomore Gavin Pratt on the mound for and would start the game off hot once again. 

The Bison would score an unearned run in the first from a wild pitch and the Jackets would respond with Bell singled to right center field scoring Burner. 

The Bison would take control for a while, two in the second from a double and scoring on a fielder’s choice. 

After a home run in the third inning, Bethany led 4-1. No one scored again till the seventh where Bethany would face freshman Alex Nicholson and the Bison would double, scoring two and in the eighth they would add another from a homer making the score 7-1. 

The Jackets did not give up and rallied back in the bottom of the eighth, starting with back to back singles from Burner and Ours and Bell would send them all home with a three run dinger to make the score 7-4. 

The inning would not end there though as Burgdolt would add another run with a solo home run to the left field wall. 

Finally the Jackets would get two more singles from freshmen Alex Ashberry and sophomore Hunter Hamilton which led to a Giraffa single advancing the lead to 7-6. 

The Bison would retaliate by adding an insurance run in the top of the ninth making the score 8-6 with the Yellow Jackets having three outs to get the job done. 

It would take long as the Jackets would quickly get two on base with a Burner walk and single from Bell which would bring up Burgdolt who would hit the ball over the left field wall for a 9-8 walk off. 

“It was electric, I knew it off the bat. I heard the boys scream, and never had a doubt,” Burgdolt said. “Running around the bases was crazy, I really didn’t know what to think. Then they mobbed me at the plate.”

The Jackets improve to 13-10 overall and reach an impressive 6-1 conference record. They play next Tuesday at Westminster for another Double Header with game one starting at 1 p.m.
